Invention Headline Image Up Up And Away With A Glenn Martin Jetpack Posted as a New Invention on 2008-08-05

The jetpack has always been a much sought after invention, which as of yet no one has managed to invent a safe, secure and economical version of. In my younger days, I used to envisage a world where people would use jetpack and take to the skies, reducing the need for transportation on the roads. It is disappointing that no jetpack has managed to enter the mainstream market. Inventor, Glenn Martin, is the latest to have a go at developing a safe jetpack product. It is not exactly a jetpack, since there are no jets involved at all. This jetpack is powered by two gasoline fuelled 200 horsepower fans, which make the jetpack incredibly loud. The lack of flaming jets is why Martin...

Invention Headline Image Sea Pollution Fought By Robotic Buoy Posted as a New Invention on 2008-08-04

Osaka University have engineered a sophisticated new robotic buoy which aims to minimise sea pollution. The robot aims to reduce oil spillages aboard oil tankers. The prototype, termed SOTAB (Spilled Oil Tracking Autonomous Buoy), is a 110Kg GPS-enabled robot which measures 2.7m in length and 27cm in diameter. The concept allows the robot to be dropped into the sea automatically when an oil spillage occurs. Unfortunately the robotic buoys will not be instilled for a further three years, as it will take that duration of time to develop them from the labs into productive use. Naomi Kato, professor of Submersible Robotic Engineering in the department of Naval Architecture, developed...

Invention Headline Image Luminous Stretchy Rings Around Your Glass Posted as a New Invention on 2008-08-01

It is common for people to take a drink of water with them to their bedroom at night. This is more familiar to light sleepers who wake with a thirst, so this little invention may be of greater use to you, than heavy sleepers. So, the invention is effectively a set of luminous, glow in the dark elastic bands, which have been defined as a 'new gadget'. Also, the seller refuses to accept that they are rubber bands, calling them 'stretchy rings'. Uh, yeah - the expression six and 2 three's springs to mind, pardon the pun. Although not revolutionary as the seller likes us to believe, they can prove useful to those who take a glass up to their darkened room and potentially reduce...

Invention Headline Image What On Earth An Electromagnetic Globe Posted as a New Invention on 2008-06-24

What on earth! This space structure has been implemented by astronauts in an attempt to cool the polar caps of the earth, and to reduce global warning. OK, well that is fiction -- but this little global ornament with an electromagnetic mechanism inbuilt looks pretty damn cool! Especially with the blue LED's which illuminate the Earth during times of darkness! Not a ground breaking invention, but something we think looks cool and would sit well on anyone's desk.

Invention Headline Image Finger Print Identification For Passports Posted as a New Invention on 2008-06-23

Biometrics is not exactly common in our everyday lives, but the technology holds so much potential that it is inevitably going to be introduced. One form is fingerprint identification, a technology which promises so much in terms of individual security and a far safer approach to identification. Up until now, these types of technologies have only been experimented with, but now Government ministers and the Post Office have agreed to implement ID passports with sophisticated fingerprint technology built in. The current plan is to roll out the fingerprint secured passports in 2012, with some experimental cards being introduced in 2009 to Non-EU nationals and 'workers in sensitive...

Invention Headline Image Robbo Bicycle Powered By All Four Limbs Posted as a New Invention on 2008-06-12

Here is another bike with a twist, a bicycle which exercises all four limbs, without being restricted to indoors. The concept is built around a regular bicycle, but with a swivel axel attached to allow your arms to increase both your muscle and your speed. It is extremely easy to make and attach to a common bicycle and within a few hours of practice, you should be able to ride it as if you've been using it since you very first learned to ride a bike. It is rare for a bike to offer exercise to the upper body, so therefore is an all round comprehensive workout. The bike termed 'Robbo' includes a swivel lever design which can be applied to many existing machines including paraplegic...

Invention Headline Image Refrigerator Aquarium Offers Fresh Served Food Posted as a New Invention on 2008-05-01

Ok, so what do you get if you cross an aquarium with a refrigerator? This sounds like a joke, but this new invention does exactly that, merges the two functions of each separate device. At the bottom of the fish tank is an additional tank which contains freshwater fish, with pods for growing vegetables at the top. The neat part is that the plants filter the water which gets to the fish, whilst the fish fertilise the water for the plants. The Locavores appeared in San Francisco in 2005 and define themselves as 'a group of culinary adventurers who eat foods produced in a radius of 100 miles (160 km) around their city'. By doing so they aim to reduce impact on the environment...

Invention Headline Image Lava Lamp Shot Glasses Posted as a New Invention on 2008-04-29

Shots of alcohol are the preferred drink for many drinkers, due to the speed at which you can drink them, and the speed which they can get you drunk. Those taking them, rarely need persuaded, and down them as if they were drinking small glasses of water. Well, now shots can be enjoyed that extra bit more, thanks to a set of Lava Lamp Shot Glasses. The glasses come in three colours; red, blue and green -- with each individual glass flashing when liquid is added to it, and when the glass becomes empty, a drinker's nightmare, the glass stops flashing. Not entirely useful, but after you've necked a few of these in quick succession we believe they will look more amusing and probably...

Invention Headline Image Aeryon Scout The Flying Camera Posted as a New Invention on 2008-04-22

One of the latest inventions to be thought up comes courtesy of a prototype version of a flying camera from Aeryon Labs of Waterloo. The camera is constructed of four foam rings which are all interconnected and each 30cm in diameter. There exists a rotor inside which makes the Aeryon Scout, as they have chosen to name it. A camera is concealed in its underbelly, where the "quad-rotor" is controlled by a remote control which allows the Scout to navigate into difficult areas, perhaps enemy territory. It could also be used more leisurely to simply make taking photographs simpler, by reaching higher to capture a special view.

Invention Headline Image Urwerk 202 Air Compressed Driven Watch Posted as a New Invention on 2008-04-17

Watches are typically battery driven meaning that you have to change batteries often during your watch's lifetime. There have been few innovations on the mechanics of watches in recent years, but there is now - and it comes courtesy of the Urwerk 202. The 202 holds no battery, but functions by making use of compressed air. The internals of the watch are waterproof, allowing the built-in turbines to rotate based on temperature changes. In an effort to increase the lifespan of the watch, there is a switch on the back which can be set at one of three positions - each controlling the turbine speeds to a different degree. "In addition, the reading manner is fairly innovative. The...

Armed with a 5 Mega-pixel CMOS sensor, scanning a photo takes a few minutes, much faster than most modern scanners. As you filter each photograph into the tray and slide them into the converter, you press...

Candles look good in any home, whether for a romantic evening or simply to decorate a room and add that extra glow. It's difficult to get candles for outside, especially due to the sporadic weather conditions, but now we have a new invention on our hands in the form of outdoor rechargeable candles. These fake candles are made from silicone and use an LED light bulb to replicate the appearance of a flame. The candles are rechargeable, and recharge themselves in the stand provided, and on a full charge the candles expected battery length is 12 hours. Unfortunately, the candles are not 100 percent waterproof, but can cope with a few spots of rain, but no torrential downpours. The...

Invention Headline Image 360 Degree Mirror Allows For Increased Vision Posted as a New Invention on 2008-03-27

Most mirrors restrict you to see from only a certain perspective, meaning that there are many hidden areas which cannot be viewed. Without attempting to swivel your head like an owl, it is impossible to view the back of your head, for example. Invention Headline Image The Modu The Worlds Lightest Phone Posted as a New Invention on 2008-03-26

Mobile phones used to be assessed on how small they were, with phone companies competing against each other to create the smallest handset on the market. Phones were now being crammed with as many features as possible, pushing both the size and weight of handsets back to a similar level when mobile phones first emerged onto the market. In the modern world, achieving the correct balance of size and features is critical. Sizes and features are constantly being designed and re-thought and Modu have now released the world's lightest ever mobile...

Invention Headline Image All In Once Pc Built Inside Computer Keyboard Posted as a New Invention on 2008-03-25

All in once PC's are typically a monitor with all the common technology located inside the monitor rather than a separate unit, the iMac is a prime example of such a design. Monitors are not upgraded all that often so this approach appears to be logical, and great in terms of space. Now, how about an all in one PC which stores the separate unit not inside the monitor but inside the keyboard? It may sound like impossible, but the keyboard essentially is the same size as a laptop and opens up in a similar fashion. On the positive side, in comparison with the iMac, the keyboard all in one package allows for you to upgrade your monitor without having to upgrade the entire system. On...
